Spanish painter, graphic artist, writer, sculptor, filmmaker and stage designer of the 20th century. Important artist of modernism, representative of the avant-garde, main representative of surrealism. Studied at the Academy the San Fernando in Madrid from 1922, in the dormitory he met Luis Buñuel and Federico García Lorca. In 1926, first trip to Paris and first contact with Pablo Picasso. At the suggestion of Joan Miró, he joined the group of surrealists around Hans Arp, André Breton, Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, René Magritte, Man Ray, Tristan Tzara, Paul Éluard and his wife Gala in Paris in 1929. Gala became his companion and muse, inspired him to depictions of Venus and Madonna, modeled for him as a nude. Stylistic development between early Impressionist attempts, influences of Cubism, Pointilism and Futurism, to Surrealism and Dadaism. Themes such as the encrypted, mystical, symbolic, the unconscious, dreams and fantasy worlds. Fusion of dream and reality, man and animal as here in the bronze sculpture Venus à la Giraffe.
